Some musicians play from the Heart others play from the
mind.
You ask a question which is a fundamental one.
The first and most important is that what you play comes through you from the heart, or
source. After all, a true musician is only playing the harp as a vehicle for this communion to
happen. All the musical notes are doing is somehow holding the attention of listener and
player together so this communion can happen. You no doubt have experienced this
with many musicians. Some can play with great skill and dexterity and yet that magic doesn't quite
happen for you.
With with a true master musician (in this case harp player)
something else happens, the music takes you somewhere ,you don't even know it, you are absorbed
into the enjoyment of the music and also the sound quality of the instrument takes on another
quality too. This is when true healing can happen.
So the first thing is to relax and tune in to the beauty of the
sound coming from your fingers plucking the strings.... And of course you need to "get out
of the way", let any ideas of how the music should be take a back seat. Just play like a child. I
have students who come to learn the harp. Apart from learning the technique of playing the harp what
I teach is unspoken; showing students how they can make beautiful music with ease. This often
reveals hidden negative thought patterns which hold back the learning process. These are
addressed as they arise and to the extent that the student can accept .
